What is BOTOX®?

Now in use for 20 years, BOTOX® Cosmetic is a non-surgical, physician-administered treatment that can temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines between the brows. It does not fill lines, it merely causes muscles in the face to relax. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium. During treatment, very low doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic are administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles that cause those stubborn lines, causing them to ease the expression causing the wrinkles. The treatment is usually done in about 10 minutes, and no recovery time is needed. Within days, you may see an improvement that can last up to 4 months. Results may vary.

How does BOTOX® work?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is intramuscular, blocking the chemicals that cause facial muscles to contract, thereby relaxing them.  It generally last 3 months, but may last longer even up to six month in some cases.

What causes frown lines between the brows?

The lines that appear between your brows actually result from muscle movement and the passage of time. Two muscles are largely responsible for frown lines between the brows. When those muscles contract, they draw the brows together. As the skin becomes less elastic over time, repeated frowning can result on those moderate to severe lines between the brows. The wrinkles resulting from the expression can deepen as sun reacts to natural aging and sun exposure.

What are the common side effects?

The most common side effects following injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic include headache, respiratory infection, flu syndrome, temporary eyelid droop, and nausea. Less frequently occurring (<3%) adverse reactions include pain in the face, erythema at the injection site, and muscle weakness. These events are thought to be associated with the injection and occurred within the first week.

What is the treatment like?

BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment is quick and minimally invasive. Your doctor makes a few very tiny injections into the muscles that cause moderate to severe frown lines between your brows. Your doctor will determine exactly where to administer the injections to achieve the best results. No anesthesia is required, although he may choose to numb the area with a cold pack approximately 10 minutes prior to injecting.

When will I see results from a BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment?

Within days, you may see a marked improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows. Lines continue to improve for up to a month, and results can last for up to 4 months. In clinical trials, nearly 90% of men and women rated the improvement in their appearance as moderate to better 1 month after treatment. Results may vary.
