At the St. Louis Laser Liposuction Center, we want to ensure that all of our patients understand everything about any procedure they may undergo. This is especially important when considering liposuction and the procedures possible post-operative side effects and recovery times. We want to emphasize that every individual will have a different experience; however, there are some general expectations.
Possible Side Effects & Pain From Liposuction
The level of liposuction recovery pain you may experience often depends on how much liposuction you will undergo. The area where the liposuction is performed should also be taken into account. The most painful part of recovery is the first 4 or 5 days, and you should be able to regain your normal schedule and activities within after the initial recovery. In general, you should expect some level of soreness for several weeks to a month or so. In addition to pain from liposuction, you may experience side effects such as:
- Mild fever
In some cases, you may be prescribed medications for liposuction recovery pain, and/or antibiotics to prevent possible infections. You should not that aspirin and ibuprofen should not be taken as these medications can cause bleed and other such complications. If you do experience fever, headache or other similar symptoms of an infection, please contact us at once.
Before and After Liposuction
In most cases, patients are able to return to their normal routines from a couple of days to a week after surgery, depending on the size of the liposuction surgery. Some may take a few days or longer, especially if you have a physically strenuous job. However, the recovery time should not be more than a week.
After most liposuction procedures, you will be instructed to wear compression garments or bandages to promote healing. The time you have to wear these garments will depend on your individual case/treatment area, and you will most likely need to wear them for at least two weeks.
There may be some completely normal swelling and bruising, along with some fluid drainage. These effects can last a few days or a few weeks. Again, this depends on the individual and the procedure implemented.
You should be able to go back to a normal routine within a few days or so; however, you should continue to follow any and all post-op instructions because they are in place to reduce possible pain and to prevent side effects or complications.
